Quick reads to boost your score before you even upload.

How your resume score works

Your Resumes Coach Score (RCS) is a single 0-100 number for how strong your resume is on its own, before you tailor it to any specific job. We read the whole document and rate it against what strong resumes and applicant tracking systems (ATS) consistently reward:

It is not a keyword count, and it is not scored against a particular job. It reflects how your resume comes across to any recruiter or ATS.

Once you have your score, the real leverage is tailoring your resume to a specific job. That's where role and keyword matching comes in: compare your resume against a real job description and see exactly which bullets to sharpen and which keywords you're missing for that role.

What your report looks like

We check your resume against what recruiters and applicant tracking systems look for: formatting, keywords, structure, and content quality. Here's a sample of the report you get, not a real person's resume.

Good

Solid resume with a few things to fix. The full report shows exactly how.

Your Resumes Coach Score (RCS) measures how well your resume performs with ATS systems and hiring managers, rated 0-100.

Top issues to fix

  • Fix Critical: Your experience reads as a list of duties, not achievements. “Responsible for the product roadmap” names the task but not the result or the scale behind it.
  • Add None of your top bullets include a number. Quantify impact (revenue, percentage, users, time saved) so a recruiter can gauge the scale you worked at.
  • Fix Your summary opens with a generic line (“results-driven professional”). Lead with your specialization and one signature result instead.
  • Remove Skills are buried in a dense paragraph that an applicant tracking system struggles to parse. Switch to a clean, comma-separated list of hard skills.
  • Style Dates are formatted inconsistently across roles (2021 vs Jan 2022). Pick one format and use it everywhere.

What's working

  • Clean reverse-chronological layout that both an applicant tracking system and a recruiter can follow.
  • Standard, ATS-friendly section headings (Experience, Skills, Education).
  • Complete contact block: name, email, phone, and LinkedIn are all present.

Your emailed report lists every issue we find, not just these, with a step-by-step fix for each one.

Common questions

How is the Resumes Coach Score calculated?

We rate your resume across content, structure, formatting, polish, and completeness against general hiring standards, then combine them into one 0-100 score. It reflects substance, not a keyword count.

What's a good resume score?

Scores run from 0 to 100. As a rough guide: 90 to 100 is excellent, meaning your resume is clean, specific, and ready to send; 70 to 89 is good, it works but has a few clear things to sharpen; 50 to 69 is fair, it will get read but weak spots are costing you; and under 50 needs work before you apply. A higher score means fewer reasons for an applicant tracking system or a recruiter to screen you out, so more of your applications reach a human and turn into interviews. You don't need a perfect 100, though. Past the excellent range the gains get small, and chasing a top score by cramming in keywords can make your resume read as robotic to the person actually hiring. Aim for a strong, honest resume in the good-to-excellent range, then tailor it to each specific job.

Is this the same as an ATS score?

Not exactly. An ATS (applicant tracking system) is the resume screening software employers use to parse, rank, and filter applications before a person ever sees them. The Resumes Coach Score measures how ATS-friendly your resume is: whether it parses cleanly, uses the right keywords, and follows a format an applicant tracking system can read, plus how well it reads for a human recruiter.

Does it score my resume for a specific job?

No, not on its own. The score reflects overall resume quality. To see how you match a specific role, run your resume against that job description and get a match score, keyword gaps, and tailoring suggestions for that exact posting.

Will a higher score get me more interviews?

Not on its own. A higher score means clearer structure, stronger content, and clean formatting that both an ATS and a recruiter can read quickly, so your resume isn't the thing holding you back. No tool can promise interviews, but it takes the resume itself off the list of reasons you get passed over.

Does it work for any industry or role?

Yes. It works for every industry and every career level, from a first internship or recent-graduate resume to a senior or executive one. The score is based on universal resume standards like quantified impact, clear structure, relevant keywords, and clean, ATS-friendly formatting, so it applies whether you're in software engineering, marketing, finance, healthcare, sales, or education, and whether you're writing your first resume or making a career change.

What happens to my resume and email?

You can get your score with no account. If your resume includes an email address (or you enter one), we email your results and occasional resume tips, and you can unsubscribe anytime. We don't sell your data. See our privacy policy for details.

Do I have to pay?

No. Your score and top issues are free with no account. A free account unlocks detailed fixes, rewrite suggestions, and matching your resume to a specific job.

What files can I upload?

PDF or Word (DOCX) resumes. We parse your file the same way an applicant tracking system would, so you see the formatting, parsing, and readability issues an ATS would catch before you send it to an employer.
